Next unroll the carpet padding from one side of the room to the other and slice it off with a box cutter. Once the padding is in place staple it down every 2 feet and duct tape the seams together.

To install carpet start by nailing the tack strips to the floor using 2 nails for each strip. A long power stretcher that will brace against the walls to stretch the carpeting taut across the entire room and a knee kicker that will help you push the edges into corners and over the tack strips around the perimeter of the room.

Two types of stretchers are essential to a good carpet installation. The packaging will tell you whether the strip is designed to be used for carpet to carpet carpet to hardwood carpet to vinyl or carpet to ceramic. Tape neighboring pieces together with 2 to 3 inch masking tape or as directed by the manufacturer. Install carpet pad so that any seams will be at right angles to those in the carpet.
